lake scenes this week: Kittamaqundi and Centennial ~~ meeting a snapping turtle on the path

Lake Kittamaqundi in the rain and sun...

On one morning stroll, I found this small eastern common snapping turtle crossing over from Lake Kittamaqundi to the Little Patuxent River. Pretty to look at -- but do not play with it!

A pearl crescent -- one of the last of the summer butterflies? Reports for the annual Howard County butterfly survey have continued into the fall on warmer, sunny days.

Centennial Lake

Birdwatchers are looking for migrating waterfowl now. I only found the Canada geese concentrated at the western end of Centennial that day.

Back at Lake Kittamaqundi yesterday: fall colors over the path. Three migrating pied-billed grebes continue their visit here.
