The Magnificent Mergansers

...and a few goose droppings on ice. The hooded mergansers which spend the winter on Lake Kittamaqundi tend to be shy and difficult to photograph without a powerful zoom. Last winter, when I found this small flock hemmed in by the ice and less intimidated by people on the path, I didn't miss the opportunity. I only noticed what was on the ice behind them when I opened the photos on my desktop at home. I've cropped a few of these shots for more focus on the birds in the water.

They are back again this winter, just a few so far. I've only captured some shots with my compact camera:
