Opera Calendar ~ Snow Lake

First, tonight, January 11, Columbia's Candlelight Concert Society continues its 41st season with the Fine Arts Quartet and violist Roberto Diaz in works by Beethoven.

Coming up on the local opera calendar and little beyond:

Lyric Opera Baltimore

~~concert of French grand opera arias with tenor Stephen Costello and soprano Nicole Cabell, April 25
~~Verdi's "Nabucco", May 9 and 11 Va, pensiero!

Baltimore Concert Opera
~~Bizet's "Les Pecheurs de Perles" (The Pearl Fishers) on February 28 and March 2 at the Engineer's Club in Baltimore's Mount Vernon district. This opera is the origin of a popular and gorgeous duet for tenor and baritone.

Washington National Opera
~~Jake Heggie's "Moby Dick" runs from February 22 to March 8. Cast includes Carl Tanner, Stephen Costello (see LOB above) and Matthew Worth.

Washington Concert Opera
~~Verdi's "Il corsaro" (The Pirate), March 9.

Prince Igor at the Met
~~Of special note: My favorite opera, "Knyaz' Igor'", is being performed at the Met, February 6 to March 8. I can't make it to NYC, but this one will be broadcast to movie theaters. Production design in the few photos I can find looks very pretty -- maybe breaking with the conventional way to stage this opera but quite striking. See the February issue of Opera News.

Also, Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role for the Met's production has a new recital album of Russian arias for bass.
