Three double-crested cormorants joined the gulls on Lake Kittamaqundi's paddle-boat dock yesterday, January 1. Sibley's bird guide tells me that the two birds with lighter front plumage are juveniles; the all-dark bird on the right is an adult. Double-cresteds sport a crest of feathers over each eye during breeding season.
